About this course

Students completing this course will gain the skills and knowledge required to supervise the safety of participants in aquatic recreation facilities and manage water-based rescues and emergencies, including the prevention of drowning.

Students will also gain the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

Course Details

Course delivery

This course is offered as a face-to-face course. Pre-course learning is required.

Course duration​

Face to face minimum duration is 2 – 3 days. 

Pre-requisites​

There are no formal prerequisite units required for entry into this course. Learners will require English language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills.

Entry requirements​

As per the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations (GSPO), there are minimum age, health and fitness requirements for those employed as a Pool Lifeguard. Should students wish to become employed as a lifeguard following the successful completion of this course, the GSPO should be reviewed by the student prior to enrolling in this course, to ensure the criteria can be met.

Training requirements​

Face to face training consists of theory presentations and range of practical learning activities and scenarios.

Assessment requirements​

Assessment activities will include a knowledge test and practical assessments. Students will be required to complete specific assessment components including but not limited to:

  • Swim 200 metres in less than 6 minutes unaided
  • Retrieve an object from the deepest water within the aquatic environment no greater than 3 metres in depth
  • Complete a 25-metre swim and a 25 metre non-contact tow of a conscious casualty in less than 1 minute and 45 seconds
  • Work as a team to remove an unconscious person from the water
  • Work as a team to perform spinal immobilisation, stabilisation and removal of a suspected spinal injury casualty in both shallow and deep water

Course renewal requirements​

It is recommended by the industry to renew this course every 12 months and first aid every three years.
