Students completing this course will gain the skills and knowledge required to supervise the safety of participants in aquatic recreation facilities and manage water-based rescues and emergencies, including the prevention of drowning.
This course does not include HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, as it is for students who already hold this current certificate.

This course is offered as a face-to-face course. Pre-course learning is required.
Face to face minimum duration is 16 hours.
There are no formal prerequisite units required for entry into this course. Learners will require English language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills.
As per the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations (GSPO), there are minimum age, health and fitness requirements for those employed as a Pool Lifeguard. Should students wish to become employed as a lifeguard following the successful completion of this course, the GSPO should be reviewed by the student prior to enrolling in this course, to ensure the criteria can be met.
